A new season of Drag Racing gets underway at Smeatharpe this coming Saturday (March 18).

The Dakota raceway will once again be the venue for the appearance of the areas super fast bikers.

Mark ‘Wolfie’ Smith is back for another season and, following his successes in 2016 he had gone up a class and will compete in the modified street bike class this year.

‘Wolfie’ has been fortunate to attract some superb sponsorship during the winter months and has found of particular benefit a link up with Plymouth company GT Motorcycles . Mike Grainger, owner of the business is the man who Smith is very grateful to as he alluded to saying: “ Mike [Grainger] has had my bike on the rolling road down there and its now dynotuned which really has added a whole new dimension to things. The added power is noticeable and I’d like to think its going to help me in my bid to set even more new record times in 2017.”

A key new factor for Smith is that his bike is now fitted with air shifter and power commander which all mean that he can change gears whilst at full throttle and simply by the touch of a button.

Smith says: “This year the targets are to get into the eight second times (his current best if 9.39 seconds) and also to reach a speed of 160mph.”

Smith is keen to laud the support he gets to keep him at the top of his sport. His chief mechanic and engineer is Graham Codling of whom Smith says: “He’s a genius and makes such a difference. He is certainly my ‘right arm’ when it comes to the mechanical and engineering side of the sport.”

Recently, during a training run, Smith had problems with his bike and Paul Lewis of Cotford Garage was swiftly by his side to sort the problem out.

Smith says: “Without the support of the likes of Graham [Codling] and Paul [Lewis] things would be much tougher – the pair are diamonds that’s for sure.”

This first meeting of the new season will once again see Smith combine his own riding schedule with scrutineering at the event. Thos wanting to see Smith in action will find him on the track and racing between 11am and noon.

Once again at the course, as well as the experts on two wheels, there’s an opportunity for anyone who fancies trying the sport of drag racing out. For £10 people can pitch up with licence, helmet and leathers, and put their bike through its paces. There is also the opportunity to have three goes at it – and for that the cost is £20.
