If, as has been suggested here multi-terrain racing is the post-modern runner’s cross-country then the Parkrun (a nation-wide phenomenon) is his or her Fun Run, writes Dave Eveleigh.
The final Sunday in March saw a whopping 277 people run locally at Killerton.
This coming Saturday (April 5) a new Parkrun begins at Parke, Bovey Tracy, just in time to absorb some of that climbing number of participants it would seem.
Usually half-a-dozen Exmouth Harriers members take part. Some volunteer to help at the event too. In recent weeks Carly Miller, Les Turner, Roger and Mary Rowe and Mike Keep have helped out for example – think a less glamorous but equally rewarding version of being an Olympic Gamesmaker!
During the last two months Personal Bests over the weekly 5km run have been hard to come by, with such soggy ground under-foot not surprising. Indeed in years to come if you want to emphasise how wet this winter was to a runner you might try explaining that it was so wet that two Parkruns were cancelled, as were those planned for Killerton on Fenruary 8 and 15.
Jill Dupain though got her PB down to 43:39 and Lisa Hatchard reduced hers to 24:38, Lisa also winning her Over 40 age group that day.
In the women’s field Ellie Sutclife won a couple of times and was runner-up on three occasions.
On March 15, Cathy Newman was first female in 19:21, just six seconds outside her Killerton best and a long way ahead of everybody else using age and gender adjusted times (expressed as 87 per cent). Adam Miller bagged third place overall in February. In the age groups Jon Garrity (Over 40 and seventh overall on the same day), Andrew Kennedy (Over 55), Dave Eveleigh (Over 60) and Les Turner (Over 70) picked up first places, with Garrity later finishing second, then third in his age group and Kennedy (a regular) second in his category four times. Mike Musgrove was second man Over 45 twice. Roger Rowe took part regularly, often as the race ‘sweeper’, and other Exmouth club members to be seen were Chris Dupain who was fifth overall two weeks ago, Lee Russell, Carly Miller and Diana Richards.
