Winston’s at Seaton was the place to be last Friday evening as AVR once again gave charity donations to mostly local organisations that helped put on this years Grizzly run, writes Dave Mutter.

A superb total of £32,000 was presented to 62 groups ranging from athletics clubs to preschool organisations, reading rooms and Bicton Overseas Agricultural Trust. There were 22 marshal groups, eight drinks station groups, nine groups who helped the event run smoothly around the Seaton area, 10 specialist groups, 17 local landowners who donated to their chosen charity plus various others made it a very special event indeed.

This years main beneficiary was the Seaton Scout Group with £5,200 that will help refurbish the back room of the Scout Hut. The South West Coast Path association was given £2,000 to help put right the damage caused by last two winter’s stormy weather. Much of the money will be spent on local community projects such as an eco-shelter for little tots, Seaton Party in the Park, Seaton Marshes, scouts camping equipment, local group’s kits and costumes, while some groups passed on their donations to large charities such as Alzheimer’s Society, RSPCA and the Tibet Foundation.

As a result of the latest donation, since 1997 AVR have donated £305,000 to various charity groups – a terrific total for a small running club in an area where we are fortunate to get such great help and support from many in the local community to put on an internationally attended event. We also asked runners to let us know if they ran the Grizzly and many responded running for charities such as the Goethe Bethesda school and orphanage in India, with Sidmouth runners Ben Chesters and Sam Morris running for National Osteoporosis Society, the charity of Ben’s brother Tom and three of his friends who died in the Glencoe Avalanche on January 19, 2013.

Alltogether the known amount raised by the runners was £11,531.48.

After the presentations the small Grizzly Committee was given a rapturous round of applause for putting on the event and first time Race Director Dave Thomas was given a special award for doing a magnificent job in leading the Grizzly team for 2014.

All in all it was a really great evening, so special thanks to Winston’s for putting on the event at short notice.
