An afternoon of Gilbert and Sullivan in Seaton

18:30 22 January 2013

Archant

Members of Seaton Choral Society will present an afternoon concert of Gilbert and Sullivan songs and ensembles in Seaton Town Hall

The audience will sit round tables, cabaret fashion, and a rather good cream tea will be provided on Sunday, February 3, beginning at 3pm.

It is probable that neither Gilbert nor Sullivan would claim the label ‘genius’ but the artistic collaboration between the two is another matter .

Gilbert’s satire, while being sharp, was neither bitter nor angry but high spirited and funny.

He revelled in the characters and foibles of politicians and others, just as Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn did in writing Yes Minister.

While retaining a musical command of rhythm and metre, he fashioned his rhymes and phrases with ear-tickling ingenuity.

By some miracle, along came Sullivan, with a powerful desire to write serious symphonies.

Instead he was persuaded to match Gilbert’s brilliant nonsense with tuneful, joyous nonsense of his own, partnering the words with matchless grace and vitality.

Perhaps it was his painful sacrifice of ambition that brought about the miracle.

For a winter afternoon’s nostalgia, go along on Saturday, February 3, when Les Baker and members of Seaton Choral Society will present a programme of some of the best-known songs and ensembles from the operas.

Pre-booking is advisable with tickets (£6 inclusive) available from the box office at Seaton Town Hall on 01297 625699.
