There’s a pantomime with a twist coming up at Exeter’s Barnfield Theatre.

It’s the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast, but given a local spin by its writer and director.

Presented by the Exeter Little Theatre Company (ELTC), the panto tells the tale of spoiled and arrogant Prince Scott. When he’s cursed by an evil fairy, he must learn to love before the last rose petal drops, or face staying a beast forever.

With the help of his trusted servants he might be able to break the spell when he meets smart and charming Belle, whose family runs the Bottoms Up pub in Exeter.

However, the beast has competition for Belle’s heart as the city’s heart-throb Gaston will not give up until he marries her.

Can our brave bookworm learn to not judge a book by its cover? She’ll need the help of her family and best friend Silly Billy to stop evil from winning.

Writer and director Clarissa Place said: “Many people love Beauty and the Beast. There’s an underlying message of not judging a book by its cover, and it’s perfect for a Christmas-time pantomime.

“I’ve enjoyed writing my own version to give it an Exeter twist, and I’m excited for audiences to see the hard work of the cast and crew.

“There will be lots of musical numbers and audience participation, and it’s a show for the whole family.”

ELTC chairman David Gunn-Johnson said, “Clarissa’s take on Beauty and the Beast is inspired. Under her leadership the journey of casting, rehearsal, set design, costume making and set construction has brought together a talented team to create an entertaining fantasy. We’ve all had a wonderful time bringing this pantomime to the stage.”

Beauty and the Beast is full of fun and laughter for all ages,” says an ELTC spokesperson. “Don’t miss out on this magical tale. Book your tickets now.”

Show dates: December 21-23, December 27-31, January 1 and January 3-6. Show times vary; check with venue.

Tickets: £13.50 (adults) and £12 (children), £10 (January 3 and 4 only).
