Curtain to rise on Kilmington pantomime

Kilmington’s annual pantomime opens tonight at the village hall and this year the Kilmington Players are presenting the classic tale of Dick Whittington.

Dick Whittington, a simple country boy from Gloucester, makes his way to London seeking his fortune, accompanied by Puss his magical talking cat.

The city is in the grip of a plague of rats overseen by King Rat, who has designs on becoming mayor.

As soon as Dick arrives in London, he is met by King Rat, who warns him to leave town or face the consequences. Dick and Puss turn around to head back to Gloucester, but are stopped by Fairy Bowbelles who persuades Dick to turn again.

Dick discovers that the streets of London aren’t paved with gold, as he once thought and looks for a job instead. He soon meets and falls for Alice Fitzwarren, who promises to help him gain employment at her father’s shop.

Once there, he meets Sarah, Fitzwarren’s forceful cook, and Idle Jack, who also has designs on Alice.

Jack discovers that Dick and Alice might soon be an item, and King Rat persuades him to help frame Dick, who is run out of town as a thief.

The action then moves Captain Cod’s ship which is about to depart for Morocco, taking Alice with it. Dick and Puss get aboard and despite King Rat sinking the ship en-route, they all arrive safely in Morocco where the Sultan plans to execute them all. Find out if they live to see if the legend of Dick Whittington comes true.

There’ll be thigh slapping as well as slapstick, a sprinkling of magic and lots of songs for the audience to join in with.

The show starts at 7.30pm each evening and runs until Saturday, February 18.

Tickets are £7 for adults, £3 for children and are on sale now at Hurford’s Stores, Kilmington.
