This year’s Connaught@Christmas event will be holding special sessions for visitors who struggle with crowds, noise and flashing lights.

The idea for the ‘sensory sessions’ came from last year’s event organiser John Radford, after a chance conversation with a woman at the Food and Craft Village. She said she could not go to the illuminations because her child is autistic and would not be able to cope.

John suggested they could visit at the end of the evening when the crowds had left and he was able to dim the lights. He said: “The mum was thrilled and told me that it was very rare for her family to visit events like this.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy Connaught@Christmas, so when we started discussing this year’s event, the team all agreed that we should introduce sessions for families with the same issues.”

This year there will be two ‘sensory sessions’, taking place on Tuesday, December 13 and Wednesday 14. The first will be opened by five-year-old Coraline Troy and her parents. Coraline has Down’s Syndrome and her mother Liz said the family sometimes avoids certain activities that may be too new, loud or stimulating for her.

She said: “We may try to go to a play centre, but have to come away as she hasn’t engaged and has put her hands over her ears - it’s too much for her to take in. We feel sad about that, but at the same time proud we tried for her.”

She added that having the option of a sensory session at Connaught@Christmas was ‘absolutely amazing’.

Attendance at the sensory sessions must be booked in advance, and John said: “Please only buy tickets for these times if relevant to your child. If you simply want to come when it’s quieter, we will be happy to advise on the best times and days to visit, just contact us via the website or social media.”

Connaught@Christmas runs from Friday, December 9 until Sunday 18. Tickets are £9.50 for adults, £5 for children (under-twos are free) and £25 for a family of four, plus a small booking fee. To book a sensory session, use the code SENSORYC@C22.
