The latest piece of public art installed on the Sidmouth Wallspace is a display of pictures by Branscombe-based photographer Paul Newman.
It is called Respect Sidmouth’s Sea, and is designed to illustrate aspects of marine safety.
The composition includes Sidmouth’s rock groynes that help protect the town from the sea, the Jacob’s Ladder stairway and the Sidmouth Independent Lifeboat mannequin Alma. The photos were taken during various weather and sea conditions.
The Sidmouth Wallspace team said the subject is particularly timely, coming soon after the sea rescue of a father and daughter by young Sidmouth surfer/lifeguard Will Bolton.
The photographer used to be a member of a Royal Naval helicopter crew, flying search and rescue missions, and this influence can be seen in his work. He took up photography only eight years ago.
The Sidmouth School of Art has produced a video interview with Paul about the work, which ends with a message encouraging people to support Sidmouth Lifeboat.
