Croquet has been described as a 'fun and dangerously addictive' game - and there's a chance to try it free of charge on Saturday, April 6.

Sidmouth Croquet Club is holding an open 'taster session' from 10am until about noon for prospective new members, geared towards people who have never played before. Those who enjoy it will be offered a series of four lessons.

A spokesperson for the club said: "Last year we attracted 19 new members, and indications are that we will start the season with a comfortable membership base. However we are always seeking newbies - just turn up on the day at 10am for a cup of tea and a knockabout."

Sidmouth Croquet Club is integrated with the cricket and tennis activities at the Fortfield, and shares the clubhouse. It caters for all skill levels, and new members are predominantly beginners who receive free coaching. Casual, internal and external tournaments are played throughout the year, and the club also offers a strong social element.
