The Chiefs finished the league season at Wellington with a fourth consecutive loss to finish in seventh position.

The Chiefs started in promising fashion, forcing Wellington deep into their own 22 from the kick off. A charged down kick gifted Cameron Grainger an opportunist try. Cole Monaghan added the conversion.

Wellington dominated the next 20 minutes as their backs combined well to gain much territory and provide the foundation for three tries in response.

When the left winger sprinted deep into the 22, the forwards were on hand to finish the move off as one of them drove over from close range.

Another slick move had the Chiefs back in defence where a tap penalty move set up a try as another forward burrowed over from a ruck on the line. The fly half converted.

A strong run by the right winger set up a try for the outside centre, which was also converted.

A superior scrum enabled the Chiefs to gain some control for the remainder of the half and just before the break, Monaghan reduced the arrears with a well-struck penalty.

Yellow cards for two of the home side either side of half time helped the Chiefs cause, but they could not add to their score. Midway through the half, Wellington scored a bonus point try when the outside centre broke into the 22 and a series of rucks stretch the defence until a forward dived over from close range.

A quick tap penalty set up Dan Retter for a break into the 22. He was stopped short of the line but Dan Armstrong was on hand to force his way over from the resulting ruck for a converted try.

A Wellington penalty was followed by a fifth try from a ruck near the line when the number six benefitted from some weak tackling on a run deep into the 22.

The Chiefs showed good spirit to finish the game strongly as Jake Allen broke through on the 22 to sprint in under the posts. Monaghan’s conversion made the final score 36-24.
