Nostalgic trip towatch cricket
On a nostalgic trip to Sidmouth on May 19, I revisited the Cricket Ground where my late father was the scorer for Sidmouth teams in the 1980s.
I spent a pleasant hour watching what appeared to be an Under 13 match and was most impressed by the standard of play and the spirit in which the game was being played.
The batting side seemed to be getting the upper hand, taking advantage of the short boundaries to score freely. The bowlers and fielders obviously feeling the pressure and wobbled a bit at times - but they did not give up. Both teams were immaculately turned out in whites.
I could not stay long, but I know my father - whose claim to fame was that, as a primary school teacher in Leytonstone, he had coached the young Graham Gooch - would have been delighted to see that the traditional values of cricket were still being upheld in Sidmouth 2010.
