SIR - I have recently received my Council Tax bill for 2008/9 from East Devon District Council. It is significant that EDDC and Devon County Council's increases are shown as a percentage, ie 4.5 per cent and 3.9 per cent, respectively, whereas the Sidmouth Town Council's increase is not.Do our councils really believe Sidmouth residents are idiots, incapable of calculating the percentage increase of Sidmouth Town Council?The answer is a whacking great increase of 10.8 per cent, which bears no comparison with 4.5 per cent of EDDC and does not tell us how much of this increase is to assist EDDC in achieving its figure of "less than 5 per cent" as required by law.Harry WalkdenMalden RoadSidmouth
