MADAM - May I, through your Letters Column, appeal to your readers to support this year's Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

There is not a day that goes by without a reminder of the important but dangerous work that our Armed Forces are bravely undertaking in Afghanistan, and in many other places, risking life and limb to help make our world a better place in which to live.

Our hearts go out to those families who are affected by the loss of a loved one and to those servicemen and women who have been injured.

The Royal British Legion does such sterling work. Its services are as much needed now as they ever were, but, without the public's generosity the organisation will not be able to carry on with its valuable work at the level that is needed.

I understand the loss of a loved one through conflict, as my grandfather was killed in the Second World War on HMS Charybdis. For all those families, past and present, who have suffered from the effects of war, the Royal British Legion is always there. But we must not take that for granted.

So, please give generously - and wear your poppy with pride.
