SIR - The Save our Sidmouth petition was presented to East Devon District Council (EDDC) on June 7.

It recorded in total some 3,850 signatures, the vast majority from within East Devon. I have heard it said that EDDC can be a bit dismissive of petitions, though I trust they won’t be this time. To concentrate minds, it is perhaps worthwhile putting those 3,850 signatures into some perspective.

Cllr Mike Allen (the former chair of the EDDC local development framework panel) received just 963 votes in 2011 in Honiton St Michaels; Cllr Mark Williamson (chair of the EDDC development management committee) received 1548 votes in 2011 at Exmouth Littleham; Paul Diviani (leader of East Devon District Council) got into office uncontested in Yarty in 2011, but received just 612 votes in the 2007 contest. Between them they scored 3,123 votes. They do not seem to doubt the worth of their votes. And neither should they those of Save our Sidmouth.
