A BAND of Sidmouth quilters handed over more than £1,000 to a children's charity on Monday.Sue Davies, secretary of Sidmouth Patchwork and Quilting Club, presented Paul Curtis, community fundraiser for Children's Hospice South West, with £1,150, raised when it hosted an event in Honiton last month for quilters around the region.She also gave Mr Curtis a cheque for £100, made through sales of fabrics, quilting magazines and accessories between members during the past three months."Thank you so much for all you have done," said Mr Curtis. "We are so grateful as we support families in town and the surrounding area."He said it cost £150 a month to provide handicraft materials for Little Bridge House, one of two hospices run by the charity. "In our messy playroom they do everything from bread making to pottery."Mrs Davies thanked Sidmouth traders Hayman's Butchers and Sidmouth Garden Centre for subsidising the buffet lunch at the Honiton event, which was attended by 179 quilters from as far away as Kingsbridge and Torquay.As well as hearing from guest speaker Jeanne Stetson about her life as a quilter, Sidmouth sewer, Grace Essex demonstrated how to cover and make a book, raising £132 by selling patterns. The club has raised around £10,000 for CHSW.
