A total of £100,000 has been set aside to replace a new footbridge in Sidmouth.

The funding, to replace Fortescue Bridge, has been secured by Councillor Stuart Hughes.

Preliminary designs for the new bridge have now been put before the Environment Agency for its view.

Concerns were raised about the safety of the bridge, which has prompted calls from Mr Hughes, who wants to see the installation of the new structure at the earliest opportunity.

In the mean time, youngsters have been advised to steer clear of the area and not use the bridge rail as a platform to dive into the river.

Mr Hughes said: “The bridge provides an important lifeline.

“I am delighted to secure the funding and provide that link to The Byes for the people of Fortescue.

“It will be a like for like replacement.”

Mr Hughes said they also now had plans to completely re-deck Milford Bridge, near the ford on Milford Road.
