A ‘perfect’ summer afternoon brought large crowds out to Sidmouth as part of a national initiative.

Organisers of the town’s ‘great get together’ said 150 people attended the event on Sunday at Sidmouth Rugby Ground.

Based on an idea developed by Brendan Cox, the husband of the late MP Jo Cox, groups across the country planned an afternoon to bring communities together.

Jill Gray, one of the organisers said’ “On Sunday, Sidmouth certainly declared that ‘We have more in common than that which divides us’ and it was a life enhancing experience.

“At the time of her death, amongst many other things, Jo Cox was working on a campaign to reduce loneliness and isolation in society. This work is now continuing through the Jo Cox Foundation. There are so many ways that different organisations in Sidmouth promote integration and togetherness in our local community and Sunday afternoon was a declaration of the importance we all attach to this. We recognise how lucky we are to enjoy such a wonderful environment and proclaim our readiness to support and share with everyone around us the advantages of our way of life.”
