A ‘unique and important’ project monitoring the impact of beavers on the River Otter – England’s only wild breeding population – has been given a £150,000 boost.
The Peter De Haan Charitable Trust (PDHCT) provided the funding as part of its mission to ‘conserve and restore our national landscape’.
The total cost of the project is forecast to hit £500,000 – covering scientific study, work with the community, welfare considerations for the 11 beavers and practical management.
Devon Wildlife Trust’s Mark Elliott, who manages the trial, said: “The generous support of the PDHCT is very welcome. It gives this unique and important project a firm footing.”
The PDHCT has provided £20million to UK arts, environment and community welfare projects since it formed in 1999. Peter De Haan, its chairman and founder, said: “We wish the Devon Wildlife Trust – and the beavers – every success!”
