Broadcaster Jeremy Vine will be cutting the ribbon at midday on Saturday, August 20, before a day of family fun to make the most of the new facilities in the Salcombe Recreational Field.

The centre’s creation has been a true community effort, with events around the town raising thousands, a Herald campaign and a jackpot auction all contributing to the costs.

Group chairman Gareth Hughes said:“Scouting in Sidmouth began in 1913 and its first and only other ‘home’ was the wooden scout headquarters next to the Manor Pavilion, which was built in 1914.

“The new centre has been created from the sale of our previous home, the sale of land previously bequeathed to the group, and, very importantly, by the fundraising within the local community.

“We would like our event to be a celebration and a massive thank you to everyone who has been able to support us through the Sidmouth Herald campaign.

“We have appreciated the tremendous support from many local groups, including darts, dance groups, the Lions, the rotary clubs, the Keith Owen Fund, Sidmouth Rugby Club, the bowling club and very many individual people. This is our opportunity to thank everyone.”

Activities on the day will include archery, traditional scout camping and cooking and climbing on the new indoor wall. There will also be an obstacle course, donkeys from the Donkey Sanctuary and refreshments.
