The anticipated open day for the Phear Park project, as revealed by East Devon District Council (EDDC), was Wednesday. And, as the Journal went to press everything looked like it was on track.

The scheme, which has been led by EDDC, started with the demolition of the old wooden equipment in June 2018.

The construction of the high quality replacement concrete skate park, by industry specialists Maverick Industries Ltd, began on July 9.

The council and Maverick Industries worked closely with a group of skaters and BMX riders to help develop a skate park which would be suitable for a wide range of users.

The final design was unanimously approved by the user group who provided excellent suggestions during the design stage – their input has undoubtedly helped ensure that the park is suited to local styles and preferences.

The park has been designed so it can be expanded if further funding becomes available. East Devon officers are also currently exploring different financing opportunities, for example through developer contributions for the town.

The new skate park offers a good mixture of street obstacles, as well as a wide mini-ramp for users who want to experience air time.

The range of obstacles should allow users of all abilities to develop their skills whether they are young or new riders, or experienced and professional skaters.

Although the new design has a smaller footprint than the previous site, its concrete construction will eliminate maintenance issues and provide a much higher quality surface and ramps than the old wooden park.

An official opening event, featuring displays by professional skaters, is currently being organised and a date will be announced shortly.

Councillor Tom Wright, East Devon District Council’s environment portfolio holder, said: “This new, state-of-the-art facility provides the young people of Exmouth and the surrounding area the opportunity for exercise, fun and the ability to hone their skills.

“It also demonstrates the council’s commitment to provide outstanding services and opportunity for all sections of our community.”
