Access has now been restored to the eastern stretch of Sidmouth seafront between The Ham and the cliff path.

The new Alma footbridge has officially been opened much to the delight of residents and walkers who can once again enjoy the benefits of a shorter route between the town and cliff walk way.

Devon County Council chairman Stuart Barker was joined by Sidmouth councillor Stuart Hughes to in a the ribbon cutting ceremony this morning (Friday, October 9). The pair were joined by walkers who were keen to cross over the River Sid and enjoy the coastal views.

Construction work first began in August last year but it was temporarily delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic lockdown and logistical issues with ordering materials.

Alma Lane resident Michael Ginsberg said: “Since we first moved to Alma Lane, we always loved the walk down the hill to emerge at the picturesque seafront and we have missed that direct connection with the sea while Alma Bridge has been closed. In the interim our daughter Meg, who lives with us, has had a baby and we walk into town on a daily basis.

“With the opening of the smart new bridge, we can push the pram down to the Ham playground and the swimming pool without crossing any main roads and everyone, including those walking the South West Coastal Path, is treated once again to that beautiful view across the town and the sea, as they approach Sidmouth by the bridge. It really is a fantastic feature for residents and visitors to the town alike and my family and I consider ourselves very lucky to be here and to have our bridge back again.”

Also among the visitors to the opening event was the Herald’s new columnist Mike Dibble who said: “everyone is delighted with the opening. It has once again opened that stretch of the seafront up to residents and visitors of the town.” Grab your copy of the Herald, out today, and read all about Mike’s passion for East Devon.
