Honiton’s ancient tradition is set to attract the crowds later in the month
The tradition of throwing hot pennies in Honiton is set to take place this month.
Each year, crowds gather to catch as many coppers as they can, as they are thrown out of various windows in High Street.
The first pennies are thrown from the balcony of the former Assembly Rooms above The Old Pannier Market and then a procession follows a garlanded pole to a number of pubs from which the pennies are thrown.
Many people take along unusual containers to catch the pennies, such as old ice cream tubs and upturned umbrellas.
The pole is kept on show for the remainder of ‘fair week’ at the last public house.
This year, the event is set to take place on Tuesday, July 24.
