Wildwood Escot is preparing for a red squirrels breeding season to boost the population of the animals.
The park’s keepers contribute to the conservation of the ‘iconic’ species by sending healthy kittens to other wildlife and conservation centres to assist with their breeding programmes.
Staff are currently awaiting the arrival of a female red squirrel to join its young male squirrel. The mammals have up to two litters each year.
A Wildwood Escot spokeswoman said: “The more genetic diversity, the healthier the population – it’s essential that we contribute to these efforts.”
