Work to repair West Hill road has commenced

The repair of West Hill Road has now commenced after County Hall chiefs were ‘inundated’ with complaints about its closure.

Devon County Council’s highways authority confirmed work began on Monday (February, 22) to replace the collapsed culvert at Foxenhole and said it is likely to take a couple of weeks to complete.

West Hill Garage owners Gary and Debra Tennant (pictured) feared for their livelihood when their trade was hit as the large hole forced the road’s closure for what they thought would be months.

“We’re so very pleased,” said Debra, who bought the business with her husband two years ago.

“The response from residents who have supported us over the last few weeks has been unbelievable.

“This isn’t just for us – it’s for all the people of West Hill who were cut off.”

Councillor Claire Wright said: “I have been inundated with complaints from residents of West Hill and Ottery St Mary over the past couple of weeks.

“The large proportion are concerned with the impact on the garage and the suitability of the windy and narrow Toadpit Lane as a diversion.

“My thanks to highways officers for prioritising what will be significant works to West Hill Road, under extremely challenging financial circumstances.”
