A 30-year-old man appeared in court on Thursday charged in connection with an axe attack on a member of a church group in Sidmouth.
Richard Weddell is accused of wounding a 61-year-old man with intent in an incident in Connaught Gardens, last Tuesday evening.
Prosecutor David Burgess said the victim was with a group of friends from the Methodist Church walking in the gardens when he felt a blow to the back of is head in an unprovoked attack.
He was left with a large, bloody, gash which needed five stitches.
Weddell, of Bowd Corner, Sidmouth, appeared from custody yesterday at Exeter Magistrates’ Court charged with wounding with intent.
He did not enter a plea. His solicitor, Peter Seigne, did not seek bail and Weddell was remanded in custody until July 25 when he will reappear in court.
