SIDMOUTH town clerk, Christopher Holland, will attend the first meeting of the East Devon and West Dorset Waterborne Transport Working Group at Seaton town hall next Thursday, April 19.
He told councillors improved signage for Seaton, Sidmouth and Exmouth would encourage tourism in these towns and signs to interpretation centres, linking up to cycleways were proposed.
Exmouth already has cycleway links with Exeter and there are plans to link to the old Sidmouth Junction.
“A person could catch a train from Waterloo, get off at Seaton Junction, and catch a tram. The tourist side of this is quite exciting. If we can get any funds for this then it would be great,” he said.
Dorset and East Devon coastal corridor action plan is for integrated delivery of sustainable access, transport, information and interpretation, visitor management and facilities and environmental enhancement.
Dorset and East Devon Waterbourne Passenger Transport study concludes waterborne transport can play a significant role in an environment in which reliable services can operate regularly at an affordable price.
Its draft feasibility study suggests waterbourne transport could significantly reduce the number of cars on East Devon’s coastal road.
Capital costs for infrastructure for the East Devon service are in the region of �1.4 million and would have to be grant funded.
