DCC hunts plots to meet need for next 20 years
A SEARCH for suitable sites for future waste management is under way across the region.
Devon County Council (DCC) wants to ensure it has facilities to deal with waste up to 2031.
An extended ‘call for sites’ initiative began on Monday (September 12) and will run until October 3 as part of the authority’s Waste Core Strategy.
Waste operators, agents, landowners and interested individuals have been invited to propose available plots to be considered for future waste management development.
A list of basic requirements has been outlined to ensure a large number of unsuitable sites aren’t put forward.
DCC chiefs say proposed sites will be considered against a detailed set of criteria to establish potential environmental, social and economic impacts.
Sites that score well through the process will be included in a report that will undergo full public consultation and further assessment in 2012.
Councillor James McInnes, chairman of DCC’s Development Management Committee, said: “Planning how we’re going to deal with our waste over the next 20 years is essential.
“We expect a rise in demand for waste management facilities and have to make sure we have the capacity to deal with this.”
