THRILLED budding writer Joanne Clements scooped first prize in a competition set by popular town novelist.
Sophie King was the guest speaker at a recent Sidmouth Writers Group and set members the challenge of penning a “surprise” themed short story.
Manstone Lane resident Joanne’s heart-warming tale about Lucy, who wants to be a naturalist when she grows up, had the edge.
“Things like this don’t happen to me, ever!” she said.
Joanne has already published a collection of poems for charity.
Second prize went to Valerie Bettag for her story about vicars and vampires.
She hailed Sophie King as “an inspiration.”
