Wreaths laid across district for war victims
THERE were other wreath laying services on Remembrance Day around the Sid Valley, including one at Sidbury and another at Salcombe Regis.
Eight wreaths were laid at Sidbury, by Lieutenant Colonel Hedley Croft, OBE, chairman of the Sidbury and Sidford branch of the Royal British Legion, Councillor Tony Reed, vice chairman of East Devon District Council, Town Councillor John Hollick and representatives of the Police, Lions International, Rotary, Sidbury and Sidford WIs and the Brownies.
The service was on the theme of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, conducted by the Reverend Rik Peckham.
Of the service at Salcombe Regis, Kingsley Squire writes: Only a passing car and the pitter patter of rain upon upturned umbrellas “broke” the two minute silence at Salcombe Regis where parishioners and visitors stood by the War Memorial for the service of remembrance conducted by the Vicar, the Reverend Roger Trumper.
Councillor Ian McKenzie-Edwards, who laid a wreath on behalf of the Town Council, read out the names from the parish Roll of Honour to the Fallen, seven from the Great War, nine from the Second World War.
