A MOTORIST, spotted using a mobile phone while driving near a busy Ottery children's crossing, was caught out by an undercover police operation last week.

The driver recived a 60 fine and had his licence endorsed with three penalty points after members of Ottery's neighbourhood policing team, some dressed in plain clothes, targeted Tip Hill.

Police acted after receiving complaints that drivers are illegally using their phones and not paying enough attention to the road in areas used by scores of schoolchildren.

PC Phil Thomas said the operation, carried out during school hours for an hour and a half last Friday, will not be the last and officers will continue to tackle the "community safety issue".

Another driver was also handed a 30 fixed penalty notice for not wearing a seatbelt.
