POLICE are warning Sidmouth shopkeepers to be wary after a customer tried to scam a shop assistant on Tuesday.
The unidentified man asked to change notes with the shopkeeper a number of times-a scam called 'ringing the changes'-in order to obtain more money than he started with. However he was unsuccessful in this attempt.
Now police are urging shop workers to be vigilant and if they feel uncomfortable swapping notes, just to refuse.
A police spokesman said: "We would like to warn people that the person could be back in the area, and if incidents like this occur, to report it straight to the police.
