Plans to build 13 news houses within the grounds of Salston Manor have been given the go ahead.

Proposals were lodged with East Devon District Council for the construction of 33 new dwelling houses within the grounds of Salston Manor, in Ottery St Mary, as well as the extension of the existing listed building to form two new properties. The application also sought approval for the enlargement of two previously approved apartments.

Under delegated powers, planning officers at East Devon District Council approved the proposals.

In a committee report, a council planning officer said: “This brownfield site occupies a location outside of the built-up area boundary of Ottery St Mary and has been the subject of a number of planning applications since the building was last used as a hotel and conference centre in 2008.

“Through extensive negotiations with officers, the Council's Landscape Officer and Conservation Officer during the application process, the final design, layout, height, scale and form of the proposed development is now considered to be appropriate for the heritage and tree constraints of the site, its surroundings and its historic context.”
