While this script by Brian Luff followed the tale of Beauty & the Beast in traditional pantomime style it certainly had some 'added extras', which of course TIPPS took in their stride for this production at Tipton St John Community Hall in mid-February.

After a lively musical intro we were greeted by Bad Fairy Elvinia, well portrayed by Denise Wightman with stunning makeup and a bird’s nest headdress, as she laid out her plans to marry Prince Leopold. When the Prince understandably declined, she turned him into an ugly Beast who could only be saved by the true love of a beautiful maiden. Luckily, Good Fairy Aurora, gracefully played by Claire Martin, was on hand with her wand, and with the aid of her lovely apprentices ensured that all turned out happily ever after.

In addition to the main story were the antics of Beauty’s less attractive stepsisters, Bernice and Denise, confident and full-on performances from Natalie Anning and Claire Devin in 'thigh-defying' outfits. Poor Bill Pearson and Ken Mylne , as 'upper-class twits' Bertie and Aubrey, did very well as they tried avidly throughout to avoid their attentions but didn’t stand an earthly chance!

Mark Reader was excellent as Dame Peekaboo, most definitely played as a 'bloke in a frock', and was well accompanied by Sue Doggett, in a cuddly costume, as Lampard her pet lamb! Tim Alsford gave a strong performance as the Beast, his experience conveying a believable range of emotions, and Brian Rice and Kyle Hayes gave good support as Beauty’s father and the Beast’s Butler.

Sophie Alford as Beauty made an attractive heroine, and Ella Martin played Leopold in true 'principal boy' style.

Directors Yvonne Kellett and Stephanie Kinson did exceptionally well with a large cast and chorus and the Company numbers were particularly impressive. The choreography under Natalie’s guidance was excellent, the Juniors were delightful and very much part of the action.

Scenery was simple but effective, lighting and sound just right and the costumes well chosen. The colour co-ordinated finale made for a great Flash Bang Wallop ending to a lively, and warmly received show!
