The Sidmouth Model Railway Group mini-exhibition held at Sidford Social Hall on Sunday, March 5, was very successful.

Sidmouth Herald:

Group chairman Chris Ward said: “The exhibition had 325 visitors of all ages, some of whom had travelled from as far as Land's End and Bristol to attend our event.”

Sidmouth Herald:

There were more than 10 different railway layouts available to view. They included Chard Junction, created by Ken Banks from a British Rail track plan from the 1960s, Moor View, a wintery railway scene created by Paul and George Hollwill, Wedmore by Exeter Gauge O group and Back Brook, which has a fictional track layout, by Richard Ball.

Sidmouth Herald:

Richard, who has been a member of the club for six years, said: “I enjoy sharing ideas and the camaraderie within the group."

Peter Hudson attended with his grandson Harvey Hudson and was impressed by the turnout at the event and the craftsmanship involved in the displays. Harvey said: “I love trains so I'm having a great time. I've especially enjoyed looking at the track layouts and the attention to detail in creating the scenery.”

Sidmouth Herald:

Shirley Fielden from Bridport created Buntline Basin. Shirley has been involved in model railways for over 50 years and said: “There aren't many women involved in this hobby, but I've found the men very welcoming. We all learn so much from each other.”

Sidmouth Herald:

Sidmouth Model Railway Group currently has 32 members, including three women, and new members are always welcome. They can get involved in areas that interest them, such as soldering, electronics or carpentry. One project the group is currently working on is the Sid Vale Railway N gauge DCC layout which uses mobile phones as the driving mechanism. Work will initially involve laying track and later creating scenery and buildings.

Chris Ward said: “It was a very busy and worthwhile day. We were delighted that the displays were so popular and that both railway enthusiasts and families enjoyed their visit. We would all like to thank them very much for their support.”
