Newton Poppleford’s distinctive former toll house is up for auction.

Ye Olde Tolle House, a Grade II listed building, is in a prominent position at the entrance to the village on the road towards Sidmouth. It is a single-storey thatched building believed to date back to 1758, with a freehold guide price of £65,000 or over.

It is among the lots in the second sale of 2023 by the regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson.

Senior auction appraiser Audrey Smith said: “It was once a toll house but is now a charming single-storey thatched cottage which would make a lovely character home or even a ‘lock up and leave’ bolthole.

“Interested parties may consider some updating before occupation, or measures to increase its EPC rating and appeal for the lettings or holiday market.”

Bidding is open now and ends on Wednesday, March 22.
