The Post Office has apologised for the problems with its services in Ottery St Mary, and says it is working to resolve them.

The Post Office counter is in the One Stop shop in Yonder Street, which took over the premises from McColls in June this year.

Local residents have complained about unreliable opening hours at the post office counter, caused by a shortage of trained staff. People have also been unable to top up their electricity key meters at the counter, apparently because of damage to telephone lines during the shop refurbishment before the reopening in June.

Ottery Town Council said it has raised these concerns with the Post Office.

A spokesperson said: “The Council are in contact with the Post Office and the ombudsman regarding the ongoing issues with the Post Office and One Stop shop.

"The Council are very aware of the frustration that the problems are causing but recognise that individual staff members are doing their best and should be treated with respect by customers at all times.

"East Devon District Councillor Johns is in communication with LINK regarding the possibility of setting up a Banking Hub in Ottery St Mary.”

The Herald also contacted the Post Office to ask if it was taking any action to address the problems.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We want to apologise to any of our customers who may have not been able to access Post Office services at a time that’s convenient for them.

"We’re pleased to say that following additional training for staff at the shop, we’re confident that the branch will be able to operate its 8am to 8pm service apart from exceptional circumstances, which we will endeavour to communicate to our customers.

"We’re aware of an issue with the branch’s ability to provide a pay-station service. Our partner One Stop are working with BT to get this service reinstated as soon as possible into their store.”
