The Halloween Roller Disco at LED leisure centre on Friday, (October 27), was an enjoyable and very well-attended event.

The Hall was transformed by spooky lighting featuring images of ghosts and bats and the music included Michael Jackson's Thriller, Ghost Town by The Specials, This is Halloween by The Citizens and Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie.

Siblings Elsa and John Patterson have been organising the Roller Discos since February 2023. Both Elsa and John attend Colyton Grammar school and are keen ice skaters who want to offer others the opportunity to skate in Sidmouth and additional venues in the South West including Beer and Bridport.

Elsa said, “It's been a tremendous privilege to bring roller skating to Sidmouth and the surrounding areas and to see so many people enjoy themselves. Thank you to everyone who came to our first Halloween Roller Disco – it was fabulous to see everyone dressed up in such an array of costumes.” John added, “I really enjoy helping the younger children to learn to skate. It's good fun and reminds me of when I was first starting out myself.”

There were skaters dressed in outfits transforming them into vampires, corpse brides, zombies, witches and several versions of Wednesday Addams could be also spotted.

Young skaters Matilda and Eva-Mae are sisters who both enjoy the events. Matilda said, “I've been about 10 times. I'd never skated before but now I'm a lot more confident.” Eva-Mae said, “At first my mummy had to help me but I've learned to skate by myself. Tonight I've enjoyed dressing up in my Halloween costume.” Laila, 13 added, “It's a fun event to go to with friends.”

Sidmouth Roller Skating run weekly daytime sessions at Sidmouth LED, Primley Road, Sidmouth on Saturdays between 11.30-12.30 and cost £3.50. These will resume on 11tth November 2023. Roller Disco events cost £4.50. Spectators can attend free of charge. Skate hire is £1.50 and protective gear such as elbow pads, wrist guards and helmets are available for free.
