A former Sidmouth College student has passed out from the Britannia Royal Naval College in front of an audience containing guest of honour Prince William.

James Shelley passed out from the college on Thursday, December 14.

Amongst those watching on were The First Sea Lord, as well as 157 fellow Royal Navy Officer Cadets, 13 international Naval Officers, 15 RFA Officers and 16 sailors.

His time training at Dartmouth tested leadership, seamanship, weapon handling and navigation, all skills required to be a Royal Naval Officer.

James recently spent time on the HMS Prince of Wales, one of the Royal Navy’s two 65,000-ton aircraft carriers.

Prior to joining the Royal Navy, James published his first book, 'The Germans and the Dieppe Raid: How Hitler's Wehrmacht Crushed Operation Jubilee', which examined the controversial 1942 amphibious raid on Dieppe from the German perspective.

James now has his sights set on joining the Submarine Service.
