Sidmouth's Community Christmas Lunch was held on Monday, December 25 at Stowford Rise Community Centre.

The 48 guests enjoyed turkey with all the trimmings or a vegetarian option, followed by Christmas pudding or trifle. Wine, beer, sherry, Prosecco and a range of soft drinks were available, with coffee, chocolates and Stollen biscuits to finish. The event was completely free of charge and transport was arranged.

Guest Norma Harper said: “This is the first time I've come and I'm very glad I did. I've had an excellent lunch and met lovely people.” Fellow guest Peter Cuthba said: “I've very much enjoyed the delicious lunch and good company.”

25 volunteer helpers took on roles such as servers, cooks, table hosts, meet-and-greeters and minibus assistants. They were also able to have a Christmas lunch.

Volunteer Sam Statham said: “I've been volunteering since 2019 and I really enjoy it. My role is to be a table host, welcoming guests and making sure they have everything they need. I don't have a family at home to cook for, so it feels like every year I meet a new family round the table and we can enjoy our Christmas meal together. It's a lovely experience that unites the community."

Organiser Carla Scott said: “I co-ordinate the Christmas lunch because it's a time of year that can be difficult for people for a variety of reasons. I welcome the opportunity to help people enjoy good company and food at Christmas. We start organising in October.

"The event is completely free of charge and funded entirely by donations from residents and businesses including Sid Valley Food Bank, The Sidmouth Lions, Primley WI, WBW Solicitors, McShaws, Waitrose, the Co-op, Gilbert Stephens Solicitors, Potburys, and Sidmouth Rotary. We're very grateful to them, and also to Stowford Rise Community Centre for the free use of the hall.”

The event included a raffle and quiz, and each guest was given a small gift bag. Some impromptu carol-singing also took place.

Carla added: “The atmosphere in the hall was wonderful, with lots of chatter and guests and helpers all enjoying the festivities together.”
