A Sidmouth firefighter has retired after 33 years with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

In a ceremony on Monday, March 4, Darren Knapman was presented with the traditional firefighter's retirement gift, an axe mounted on a wooden board. He also received - belatedly - his 30-year long service award certificate and a 'people's award' consisting of a potted plant in a golden Crocs shoe.

One of Darren's colleagues explained that Darren would always turn up for a 'shout' wearing his Crocs - and the potted plant represented his job in a garden centre.
