A ‘one day museum’ is to be created in Sidmouth, using items brought in by members of the public.

Three one-day workshops with artist David Bellingham will be held at Kennaway House to put together the museum collection.

The workshops, open to individuals of all ages, families and groups will take place on Tuesday, April 9, Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11. The museum event will be held on Saturday, April 13.

Participants are invited to bring five ‘everyday items’ from their homes which either have a story behind them, or could inspire one. They could be objects found in the kitchen or garden shed – anything that can be creatively ‘reimagined’. During the workshop sessions, creative writing and drawings will be produced, based on the objects ‘as they are’ rather than what they were used for in the past.

The museum exhibition will consist of the items and the creative works they have inspired.

The project is being run by Sidmouth  School of Art and will coincide with the school Easter holidays, so families and children can take part.

Coco Hodgkinson, Artistic Director, said: “The Sidmouth School of Art vision is to make Sidmouth the artwork and provide a wide range of creative opportunities for people to get involved and explore their creativity without feeling they have to be ‘good at art’.

“We work with local, national and international artists and are delighted to welcome David Bellingham to Sidmouth as part of our skills and confidence building community approach.”

Bellingham was born in South London and lives and works in Glasgow and Copenhagen. His work is playful, conceptual and often transient and temporary in nature.

The workshops are free but places need to be booked via the Sidmouth School of Art website or here
