It may not be widely known, but April 4 is International Carrot Day, an occasion for celebrating the nutritional value of carrots.

The day was founded in 2003 'to spread knowledge about the carrot and its good attributes around the world'. In recent years celebrations are reported to have taken place in France, Italy, Sweden, the US, Australia, the UK and Japan.

The International Carrot Day website suggests holding parties featuring carrot-based food and drink, and even dressing up in carrot costumes.

But when it comes to the crunch, the four-legged residents of The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth don't need any extra incentives.

They enjoyed eating pieces of carrot threaded on to hazel branches, an 'enrichment' activity that also promotes mental stimulation and allows them to engage in natural foraging behaviour. As with any food sources, the donkeys are fed in moderation and under supervision.
