Two former residents of The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth have gone on to a new home, providing support to a bereaved donkey.

Henry, aged 17, and 14-year-old James, were always popular among staff and clients at the sanctuary's Donkey Assisted Activities (DAA) centre.

Centre manager Lauriel Woodley said: "Despite their size, our clients soon came to learn that this did not determine their behaviour, and they were extremely gentle to be around."

After many years serving their community, James and Henry retired to the charity's Rehoming Scheme, and have now been relocated to Cheshire.

Their new home is with Hazel and Leigh whose donkey Gerald had lost his horse companion Chester

.To help Gerald, his owners contacted The Donkey Sanctuary’s Welfare team, and have now adopted Henry and James. Gerald had to become familiar with the company of two larger donkeys, but the trio are now living happily together.

Lauriel said: "James and Henry had been long-established members of our DAA herd and enriched the lives of many people over the years.

"They will be greatly missed by the team in Sidmouth, but we know that they will thrive enjoying all the individual attention they will receive in their guardian home, and in the companionship of Gerald."
