THE Student Council at Sidmouth Community College is £250 better off, thanks to an award by East Devon District Council. To acknowledge the positive involvement made by schools during Local Democracy Week last October, EDDC has awarded each student council, or equivalent student body, £250, with the stipulation students decide on how the money is spent.Sidmouth's council has already planned to put the money towards part of the action plan they have been working out with Global Action organisation, which works with schools and others, to help them deliver real environmental, social and financial improvements. It gives advice and help on cutting your carbon footprint, tips on making more environmentally-friendly choices and innovative ideas on how to communicate environmental messages. It was the fifth year the college had taken part in Local Democracy Week - a series of road-shows run by EDDC to encourage young people to think about politics, how they impact on their lives, what they can do to influence decision-making and the importance of voting when they get the opportunity.
