A centuries-old historic school is set to close following financial difficulties.
Exeter Cathedral School, believed to date back to 1179, has announced it is to close its preparatory 'years 3 to 8' section after the summer term of 2026.
In a statement from the school's board of governors, the decision comes after pressures affecting many independent schools.
The statement said: "Following unavoidable financial pressures that many small independent schools are currently facing, the Governors of Exeter Cathedral School have announced changes to the school from September 2026.
"By sharing this decision now, we hope to give families and colleagues the time they need to plan for alternative school placements in September.
"We understand the impact this will have on our entire school community, our students and their families, as well as our dedicated staff and we are committed to working closely with everyone to provide guidance and support, including assistance with next steps for students and staff."
The situation for the school nursery and pre-prep section, year two and below, will be different, however.
Inspired Learning Group (ILG) will take over the running of the school’s Nursery and Pre-Prep (up to year 2) from September 2026, subject to a contract.
As part of the arrangement, Hall House will work in close collaboration with Shebbear College, an established ILG through school, close to Okehampton, Devon.
With the closure of Years 3 – 8, which include the Cathedral’s choristers, Exeter Cathedral has confirmed a new partnership with Exeter School from September to ensure the choristers can continue their studies together, locally, and in a co-educational environment.
Exeter Cathedral School will remain open in its current form until the end of the summer term in July 2026, continuing to provide high-quality education and pastoral care throughout this period.
The fees for the school's 176 pupils can cost as much as £6,952 per term between years six and eight, including over £1,000 in VAT.
The 850-year-old school has produced notable alumni, including Chris Martin- Coldplay; David Webb of the English National Opera; Andrew Nethsingha and Giles White, Hampshire County Cricket Club Manager.
This comes year after Labour launched its tax policy on private schools, which has seen 20pc VAT charged on fees and business rates.
