A lockdown writing project has grown into a four-book Second World War series putting women’s wartime experiences at the heart of the story.
Sidmouth author Deirdre Dee has written A Doctor’s Duty, the latest novel in her wartime quartet, following recently qualified surgeon Edith Fernley as she tries to establish herself in a profession dominated by men.
Set as war looms over Britain in 1939, the story sees Edith working during the Manchester Blitz before joining the Royal Army Medical Corps.
The novel follows her through North Africa, the Middle East and Italy before she joins medical teams treating D-Day casualties.
Edith is described as one of the few women to serve at the front during the Second World War.
The story also explores an unexpected reunion which leaves Edith facing a choice between her devotion to duty and the possibility of love.
Deirdre, who says she has worked as a professional actor and company director and has served as a charity trustee and Sidmouth town councillor, began writing the quartet during a Covid lockdown.
Deirdre said: “I started writing one story and ideas kept coming for the other characters.
“I've learned a lot about all aspects of WW2 and how women stepped up, contributing fully to the ultimate victory.”
The first two books in the series are Dancing into Danger, a story involving ballet and the Resistance, and An East Devon War, which focuses on a Sidmouth farming community and includes descriptions of the Exeter Blitz.
The release says the first two novels are available on Amazon.
Deirdre will be at Sidmouth Library on Wednesday, September 30, for a book signing event.
