After such a fantastic summer, it would be rather typical if the weather decided to turn a little more unsettled just in time for Sidmouth Regatta.
The forecast is currently looking less than favourable for parts of the weekend, with some showers possible, so I’m keeping everything crossed that conditions improve and that as much as possible can go ahead as planned.
It would be a shame for the weather to put a dampener on one of the highlights of the Sidmouth summer.
It is one of those weekends when the whole town seems to come alive, with people enjoying everything our wonderful seaside town has to offer – on the water, along the seafront and right across the town.
There really is something for everyone.
This year’s Regatta gets underway on Friday, August 28 with the spectacular Airshow.
From our very own Road Arrows at 3pm on the Esplanade, through to the Sidmouth and Exmouth Lifeboat display, the lifeguard demonstration and an impressive line-up of aircraft, the afternoon promises to be quite a show.
And, of course, the Red Arrows will provide the finale at 6.40pm.
But the Regatta is about much more than the aircraft.
Saturday is a real community day, with sailing races from 10.30am, Sidmouth Surf Life Saving from 11am to 12.30pm, the family treasure hunt, the return of the Three-Legged Event, Tug of War and the ever-popular Fancy Dress Raft Race.
Live jazz on The Ham in the evening will lead up to the spectacular fireworks at 9.15pm.
Sidmouth Surf Life Saving has been a big part of our family life for the past eight years, with my son being involved with the club.
They are running a barbecue and cake sale outside the Watersports Hub at Port Royal, so if you’re passing, do grab something to eat or treat yourself to a slice of cake.
Every penny raised helps support the club, and the Regatta is happy for the club to run this fundraiser, but in return asked for a few volunteers to help raise money for the Regatta, so I was very happy to put my name down to shake a bucket.
Please do support the Regatta by putting what you can manage into one of the buckets.
It helps ensure they can continue putting on an event we can all be proud of, and which brings so many visitors to our lovely town.
Please also make a point of visiting the Surf Life Saving exhibition on Saturday morning.
It’s a great opportunity to find out more about the club, the skills involved and the important work its volunteers do in our community, as well as a chance to watch our future lifeguards in action.
