Drivers and walkers face weeks of diversions while a footbridge is replaced, with a ford closed to traffic and several parking spaces temporarily taken out of use.
Work to replace Mill Street Footbridge in Sidmouth is planned to start on Tuesday, September 8, and finish on Friday, October 2.
During the works, the road through the ford will be temporarily closed, with a signed diversion route in place for vehicles.
The footbridge will also be closed, with a pedestrian diversion plan advertised on site showing the alternative route on foot.
Approximately 24 metres of parking along Milford Road, equivalent to four parking spaces, will be restricted to provide a welfare area and storage space for materials and plant used during the works.
No night works are currently planned, with all work due to take place during normal working hours.
If the works are still continuing on Saturday, September 26, the closure will be lifted for the planned Carnival Parade.
The proposed diversion routes have been reviewed by the local Neighbourhood Highways Officer and Public Rights of Way Warden.
The programme has been developed to avoid the summer school holidays and to ensure completion before Environment Agency restrictions on in-channel works come into force for the salmonid season, which runs from October 1 to May 31.
