Sidmouth College students have produced a talking newspaper for visually impaired listeners as part of a charity project.

The update was given at the 39th annual general meeting of Sid Vale and East Devon Talking Newspaper this week.

The charity produces a weekly round-up of news from across East Devon for people who are visually impaired or unable to read print.

Chair Peter Eagles thanked the charity’s 47 volunteers.

They read, edit, produce and distribute weekly editions, along with four magazine versions each year.

Volunteers work in seven teams, so each person shares the time commitment.

Over the past 12 months, several new volunteers have joined, while some longstanding members have stepped down.

The charity also completed a project with media studies students at Sidmouth College.

Three volunteers attended a lesson and discussed the value of a local talking newspaper for visually impaired people.

They also explained how to identify and edit suitable items.

Students then made their own version.

Charity patron Jeremy Vine sent a recorded introduction, which listeners heard as a supplement to the quarterly magazine.

Sixth-former Tom Parker has volunteered during the year, learning about the roles involved in producing a talking newspaper.

Volunteers thanked him for his commitment and congratulated him after he was named Ted Wragg Trust Student of the Year at an awards ceremony at Exeter University.

They wished him well with his A-levels and future as he applies for university journalism courses.

Volunteers can support reading, editing, production or distribution, with teams helping to share the work and limit each person’s time.

New volunteers of any age are welcome.
