Britain’s oldest civic society felt the regatta weekend was an apt time to award £3,400 to Sidmouth Sailing Club – funding to ‘train tomorrow’s sailors’.
Sid Vale Association chairman Alan Darrant handed over the match-funded cheque from the Keith Owen Fund (KOF) to the club’s vice-commodore, Alastair Watson.
Alan said: “The regatta provides an opportunity for the public to enjoy both sea and sailing activities.
“We backed the club in order to support its voluntary work, enabling it to buy additional sailing dinghies needed, and to underwrite the training fees for a new instructor.
“We hope people of all ages will be encouraged to take up sailing, and learn how to do it safely.”
Alastair said: “We are most grateful to receive this match-funded award. The club is celebrating its 80th year of sail training in Sidmouth.
“This is a wonderful gift to enable us to take forward our plans for more dinghies, and a wider range of Royal Yachting Association-certified training courses, especially for adults.”
